Legal Question in Family Law in California

I was divorced in 1966 and at that time assessed $1,200 per mo. spouse support. At the time I was employed and earning approx. $65,000 per year. I left the work force on Dec. 31, 2014 due to illness. I can no longer work and am now on social security at $2,000 per mo. I am 73 years old. Can I petition the court to lower my monthly spouse support amount? I cannot survive on $800 per mo. Thanks.

I think you need to re look at your old divorce decree. I have a hard time believing that you were ordered to pay spousal support for 40 years plus....nor that you have had it looked at in years with the all the changes in circumstances that would have happened in four decades. Yes you can petition but I suggest contacting an attorney and reviewing your case.

That is a lot of spousal support for 1966. Are you sure you have stated the facts correctly and have reviewed the terms of the original court order?
