The simplest way is to reach an agreement with your ex and then file a stipulated modification order. The court signs it, files it, returns your copy and you are done. If your ex won't cooperate, you have to file an OSC re: modification of custody. The forms are available at www.courtinfo.ca.gov

If you cannot reach an agreement then you will need to file a motion with the court. I would suggest that you talk to an attorney who does child custody litigation to get some guidelines. You could be stepping into problems that you do not anticipate. After that you may be able to proceed without an attorney. I would think that your chances are good, but it is better to be ready.
