Legal Question in Family Law in California
Divorse & Custody
I want to get a divorse from my husband but I don't have a lot of money. I think he may have his parents get a top dollar laywer. Do I need to get a expensive attorney to protect myself? How will this effect the child custody ruling? Also I have filled child support and he's been lying about his wages, hours and his time with her. What can I do about this? One more question, we have accumalted lots of debt together and he refuses to help me pay. He moved out and left me with all the bills. How can I have him pay for his share of the bills?

You don't need an expensive attorney, but you need an attorney that knows what he/she is doing. A lot of family law attorneys just want a "paycheck."
Talk to friends that have used an attorney and get a referral. Don't just pick an attorney out of the phone book. Question the attorney about his/her hourly rate. Yes, an attorney that charges a lot is usually a high-powered attorney, but there are attorneys who don't charge a high amount who can also do a good job.
As to child support and his lying, you will need to do discovery. This can be complicated for an inexperienced person. Please consult with an attorney. It would be better to pay for an attorney to help you than to try to do it yourself and lose because you didn't know what you were doing. A layperson is held to the same standards as an attorney if you represent yourself.

Load up on the Rolaids.
He sounds like a gym. Listen. You need a competent lawyer, they are not necessarily expensive. If the debt was incurred during the marriage it will likely be divided equally between both of you. The debtors, however, may go after both of you until it is collect. Fun. The court will do what's best for your child. Just continue to be a good parent. Try not to fight with dad. Get a lawyer to prepare a strategy.
