Legal Question in Family Law in California
I'm self employed and not able to make my full child support payments. I was served with papers and from what I can tell they want to force me to look for "employment". I no longer have a car and find this to be practically impossible.

You need to immediately file for a modification of child support. Your child support obligation continues until you file a request to modify it, regardless of whether or not you can actually afford the payments. As you are self-employed, full disclosure of your income is essential.
It sounds as though you have been served with a motion requesting a seek work order. If you are self-employed and working full-time, there should be little to no merit to this motion. Both parents are obligated to seek and maintain full-time employment commensurate with their skills, education, and experience.
