Engagement Ring

I'm sure you've heard this one before. After I broke off our engagement, my ex-fiance kept the engagement ring. Can I get it back? I haven't been able to find a clear answer to this one.

The engagement ring must be returned if the wedding is cancelled. Since he already has it you can't get it back. I actually took this issue to court for a client once and lost when his attorney showed the judge some case law.
