Legal Question in Family Law in California
Name equality act and changing last names
My husband and I live in Los Angeles but got married in St. Louis, April 2008. We would like to merge parts of our last name into our new married name (e.g., Sherburn + Heaney = Sherney). The Name Equality Act now allows Californians to do this when applying for a marriage license, but is there a way we can change our last names without going through the court process?

No. You had the opportunity to change your name only with through the original marriage license. Since that license has issued, you now would have to go through the court process and file an Petition for Change of Name.
