ex-fiance wants money back for trip we never went on

my ex-fiance purchased a vacation as a bday gift for me. We broke up before the trip. Although he paid - the travel company's policy was to refund checks made out in each of our respective names. He sent me mine but says i owe him the money for it. Do I owe him this money and if he takes me to small claims court over it would i win?

A gift is complete upon the transfer of the gift. The trip was a gift for your birthday and was complete when reserved in your name and you were told of the gift. You have nothing by telling him no and leaving the next step up to him. If he sues you will have little to lose in the worst case.
