Legal Question in Family Law in California

My ex-husband owes child support for the many years he didn't pay. He is now CEO of a company he and his wife own. I'm sure nothing is in his name. He owes thousands in arrears that I would like to collect to help my son. How do we get him to pay, although the Employment Dev. Dept shows no income for him?

You basically have two options: open a claim with the Dept. of Child Support Services, or hire an attorney to file a contempt proceeding against him. The first option is free, and may or may not be successful, depending primarily on whether or not he has any meaningful assets (income is irrelevant) that can be easily found (such as stocks or real property). They don't have the staff to hunt down hidden assets in most cases. The second option, of course, costs money, and it is illegal to take a family law case on contingency. It is the only way, however, to have a serious chance of tracing hidden money to him.
