If I have a pending hearing for modification and custody and i want to hold off is it better to have the matter put off calander or to have it continued?

putting a matter off calendar means its done, so if you want to continue it for a later time just ask the other party if they will stipulate to continuing the hearing.

Depends. If you want to hold off for more than two months, then take it off calendar, if you can.
