if a husband gave a gift to his mistress totaling in excess of $20,000 and used joint (husband and wife) monies to buy this gift. Does the wife have any recourse legally to get any of the cost of this gift back, specifically from the mistress?

No, you have to go after your spouse for breach of fiduciary duty.
