If you live with with someone like a married couple but are not married, what rights do you have? Are you not subject to what happened to Lee Marvin (actor) and would be a common law spouse?

No, but a little bit yes. Without going through the history of the Marvin case and the resulting legislsation and subsequent case law, at this point, there is firmly no common law marriage in CA, but there are what are called "Marvin contracts" which have a limited applicability. They are basically contractual rights, like business partners, but a bit more complicated because they take into consideration promises and conduct that disadvantage the outed party.

This is an uncommon issue. Very few personal relationships rise to Marvin contacts, so the specifics of your relationship need to be examined.
