Legal Question in Family Law in California

I am doing family research. My great-great uncle in his 1900 US Census, had a wife. The census said they were married 4 years. Yet, I found record showing they applied for marriage licence in 1905 in CA. My guess, they may have "married" in Iowa as common law husband/wife. I know that CA abolished common law marriage in 1895, while it's still legal in Iowa today.

Question i have,, did at anytime between 1895 and 1905, CA did not recogize common law marriage from other states

California would have recognized a common law marriage if it was validly entered into elsewhere. They may have remarried to be on the safe side.
