Legal Question in Family Law in California

Father left State and owes support

I just received my divorce in the State of Pennslyvania in January. In the divorce, it was agreed that I would receive child support for our son. However, the support amount has not been registered with family court yet. He was fired in September and has skimmed a few hundred off of the support every month now. This amount totals over two thousand. He has now relocated to California and enrolled in a class instead of getting a job to support his son. He is still receiving unemployment in Pennslyvania and I am wondering what could be done to get money from him?

Re: Father left State and owes support

California has a department that enforces child support payments. Each state has a similar agency. Contact the agency where you are living and request assistance in getting child support. The U. S. attorney also takes action to enforce child support orders. They usually file criminal charges and go after a convition. Then use the probation process to collect. The alternative is to retain an attorney in the area where he is residing and have the attorney take action to collect the child support order. This could be expensive.

You need to file a petition for contempt and you may need to register the support order in California. The local child support enforcement unit should be able to help you complete the necessary paperwork. I offer free consultations.
