Legal Question in Family Law in California

Father Promised to Pay For College

My former husband always wanted our son to attend Harvard. He pushed him from early childhood to reach this goal and always told him not to worry about the cost. After being accepted, our son again asked his father if he was sure he wanted him to go there (he could have gone on full scholarship to Berkeley). His father (who was making $200,000 per year) insisted that he go to Harvard, then he made him apply for loans every year. During his third year there, we were in the middle of a divorce, and his father stopped paying support or helping with tuition at all. My son has now accumulated an enormous debt. Does he have a case for breach of contract?

Re: Father Promised to Pay For College

My guess is that your son would lose a case against your ex for breach of promise. However, a Harvard education is very valuable and your son ought to be able to pay off the debt sooner or later, probably sooner. He also has found out that he can't trust his father, another valuable lesson.
