Legal Question in Family Law in California

Is father required to pay child support if not married to the mother?

If the father of a child is not married to the mother,is he required to pay child support? Paternity is not in question. However, father doesn't want anything to do with mother or child. He has other children. If the mother moves from Missouri to California with child, is the father also required to pay child support and according to the laws of which state?

Re: Is father required to pay child support if not married to the mother?

California will not have jurisdiction to make a child support order if the Father does not have "contact" with the State of California, that is living or working in CA, child conceived in CA,or some other substantial contact with CA. Assuming Father lives in MO, MO law prevails. If he is the Father, he is obligated to pay child support, when an order is entered, regardless of whether he has contact. Good Luck, Pat McCrary

father can be compelled to pay support but a formal paternity action must be filed in court.
