Legal Question in Family Law in California

the father of my son served me for joint custody what can I do or need to do in order for me as the mother to file for full custody.

You need to file a response that asks for what you want. Don't count on getting it, though, unless he is a totally unfit parent. Children need and deserve relationships with both parents unless one or both are a danger to the child's wellbeing, and I don't mean they just let them stay up too late and eat icecream for breakfast. I mean if you died, childrens services would take the child away from them.
