Legal Question in Family Law in California
Can someone who is filing a suit or for custody of a child serve you the papers? If not, what happens if they did?

If they do, the service is not effective if contested. If the other party responds without objection, the defect is waived.

A party to an action cannot serve papers. If you challenge service, the court will usually hold the service to be invalid, and they will be ordered to reserve you.
