Re: finishing child support payments

Usually no court action (e.g., filing a form) on your part is necessary. You simply stop payments at the appropriate time.

First, in CA your legal obligation to pay child support ends when your child reaches 18, or 19 if he or she is still in high school, unless circumstances such as a serious disability led to an extended award of support by the court.

Second, the termination of child support is usually incorporated into the language of a child or family support agreement or award.

In a general sense, if the issue is to stop the child support from being deducted from your wages, you need an amended Order Assigning Wages setting support at Zero. You can probably get some free assistance from the Family Law Facilitators Office.

For a specific opinion regarding your individual circumstances, I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!
