Legal Question in Family Law in California

i am a foster parent of a 3 month old and i have had her since she was 3 days old, picked her up at the hospital! The parents are out of the picture and the only one fighting us now for her is her cousin. We would like a lawyer, but can't afford one what are our chances or should we just give up?

You should file for guardianship over the child and see if the court will allow you to be the temporary guardians. The temporary guardianship can become a permanent guardianship if it lasts long enough and mother does not want anything to do with the child. There are many self help listings on local court websites that can give you some beginning information on how to do a guardianship yourself.

For self represented individuals you can consult with the family law facilitator self help center at your local court house.

As always please consult a local attorney prior to taking legal action. Good luck. Also please check out my Santa Clara County Family Lawyer blog.
