A friend wants to have a baby, and wants me to donate sperm. Is there a way I can do this without legally having to be the child's father?

Yes. Use a licensed physician for artificial insemination. Do not have a party and do this on your own. See Family Code section 7613, subdivision (b.)

Mr. Roach is exactly correct. Unless medical intervention is involved, you are on the hook for paternity if the friend OR the child, decides to file for paternity.
