Legal Question in Family Law in California

I have a friend in Los Angeles who has a child and is wanting to move back home to Minnesota. Unfortunately the dad who has DUIs is trying to seek sole custody. What can my friend do to get herself and son back to Minnesota? what does she need to bring to the courts?
