Legal Question in Family Law in California

I need help. I have full custody of my daughter and on her birth certificate she has no father. I recently got a court order from her father over joint custody and visitation rights but since she was born he has not helped out with her. He is asking for her during weekends and I don't feel safe letting her stay over. And she can only sleep with me at night or else she will not sleep. He cannot provide for her and his father is on disability. What can I do? I want to limit his visitation rights and do not want him to get custody of her.

I assume you feel you can not afford to hire an attorney; you should talk to some and find out how much it will cost you and whether it is worth while considering what is at stake. You probably can get the attorney to obtain a child support order so that yo have some money coming in from him [and there is no visitation without his being current on payments]. He has filed a petition but there is no court order as you state, as that only occurs after the hearing and has to be approved by the judge. You need to read some Nolo Press books on child custody and related issues.
