Legal Question in Family Law in California
Giving up your child.........
My daughter is pregnant with her first child. The father is claiming that he cannot support her in this experience. He has asked her to consider signing a document that would release him of any financial obligation towards the child. In return, he is offering to give up any paternal rights. Is this something that is allowed in California? If my daughter were to agree, would this affect her being able to get financial help from the state or county if she needed it? And could the state or county agency still go after the father for child support/reimbursement of monies owed to them? Thanks, Concerned Mom

Re: Giving up your child.........
Any document which he signs giving up his parental rights, unless accepted by a court, will not prevent the county going after him for support. One of the requirements for receiving government assistance is that she reveal the name of the father and assign her right to child support.
