Grandaughter

my grandaughter has lived in my hme since birth with bth parents @about 9mths they all moved new place that lasted 4mths and mother left baby with dad during that process i moved to ca ,i received a call asking for me to come get the baby he needs help,the baby has been living with me since 06/08 in that process mother called sept i brought her to ca for 1mth see if she could get togethr no disaster dont hear from her until 12/08 baby screamed frightened seeing her ,in nov dad comes ca gets job last 1mnth leaves,father calles 4 tmes week mom none.y fiance of 6 yrs and i support lil one carry insur all .mom and dad never married .dad says he will sign power att paprs over to us .is that legal ?if so what state should it be done in ?baby in ca, mother in AZ father in CO

You should prepare formal adoption papers. The power of attorney does not have the same effect. Since you and your granddaughter are both in CA, prepare and file the papers in CA. You should hire an attorney to walk you through the process.

An alternative to adoption is a guardianship. A guardianship may be easier to accomplish than an adoption. Also you would be eligible for financial assistance with the guardianship. The same assistance may not be available if you adopt.
