grandparent wants legal rights
I need to know what steps to take in getting the legal rights for my 20 month old grandaughter. I have been involved with her since the day she was born, almost exclusively since July 2003. The mother (my daughter) left two weeks ago without saying a word and now is in Apache Junction, Az. She finally called, but left no phone #.She would rather be a party girl and hangs out with the worst possible elements. The baby is behind in her shots and what if there is a medical emergency? I also desperately want some kind of legal way/right in preventing her mother from taking her from if she gets the notion. In the past six months the mother has been thrown out of colledge, cut off from the welfare she got and evicted from her apartment for having unauthorized people living there (who by the way, were hiding out from the law for breaking into houses, one of which, included hospitalizing an elderly woman). These are the elements I want to prevent my grandaughter from being around. I need to know how I can legally protect her from her own mother. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Janet

You can apply for a guardianship if it is convenient and necessary, which it appears it is.

The legal procedure that you should consider is a guardianship. I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!
