Legal Question in Family Law in California

Guardianship

I would like to know how to go about getting guardianship of my 51 year old mother who suffers from mental illness. She is presently living in Clovis, CA with her sister who can no longer have her in the home. I live in Medford, OR. My mother can no longer work, hears voices, leaves the stove on all day, etc. I am really concerned about the medical care she should be getting.

Re: Guardianship

In California adults are most often placed under a conservatorship. The law may be different in Oregon. The conservatorship is established by filing a petition with the superior court in the county in which proposed conservatee lives. In those cases where the person is unable to care for themselves, the court can issue an order allowing the conservator to make medical conditions.

Since you live in Oregon and that appears to be the place of the residence, you will probably have to comply with Oregon law.

There may be a government agency that will assist you in obtaining a uqardianship or conservatorship in Oregon.
