Legal Question in Family Law in California

Hello!

I am thinking about placing my boyfriend on my medical insurance plan as a domestic partner.

He is divorced and is still currently trying to settle the amount of money he needs to pay for child support with the ex-wife.

My question is, if he and I become legal domestic partners now before the amount is settled and he loses his job, am I now legally obligated to pay child support for his children as his domestic partner? Will my income be a factor in his child support case? Will it influence the amount he will be required to pay, more specifically, will it increase?

I thank you in advance for your advice and your help. This will help me make a more informed decision based on facts.

Only the parents' incomes are considered in setting child support. The policy of the state is to encourage marriage and partnership, and saddling a new spouse/partner with child support would be seriously contrary to that policy. The only thing that might have an impact is if his support is currently calculated with a deduction for insurance paid by payroll deduction. If that goes away, it could slightly bump up his payment, because that's one of the few expenses that is allowed to be deducted from income before child support is calculated. On the other hand if he's unemployed, that's a non-issue.
