You have to go to court and adopt the child. You may not need an attorney, however. Talk to the Family Law Facilitator Office at your county court and see if they can help walk you through the process. The forms are available online at courtinfo.ca.gov. You should also contact a local adoption agency, because the court will require a home study by a certified agency anyway, and they will probably be happy to help you with the rest of the process as well.
