Legal Question in Family Law in California

HIPPA Laws

Who can get information about my bills? Can medical or dental facilities disclose information to someone who isn't being billed for services? The biological father to my son and his wife continue to call and find out if I have paid my 1/2 of any bills that they have already paid their court ordered 1/2 of. Since all the bills are in my name, are my rights being violated and would this be considered harassment which is causing undue stress to me? I want to get an attorney who will help me with this because this is the second time they have done this to me. In court last year the Judge told them that once they pay their obligated 1/2 of any bill and the bill isn't in their name or affecting their credit that it is no longer any concern to them, how, when or if I pay the remaining balance.

Re: HIPPA Laws

The judge was generally correct, however, this seems like a terribly small issue to put a great deal of money, time and effort into. If I were their attorney I would probably argue that father has a right to know that the bills are being paid so that services won't be denied to my child in the future. I would charge $1,500 to make that argument. It seems that most families have better things to do with $1,500. Good Luck, Pat McCrary
