Legal Question in Family Law in California

Our Home bought 1 week after engagement

About community property-- My husband and I were engaged Dec 19 1997, moved into new townhome Jan 1 1998, married on April 1998. Home has appreciated $100,000. I was in grad school for teaching and did not work. He says his name is on title only. So all of home is his, including appreciation. I painted, mopped, vaccuumed, stripped, cleaned, refinished, added a patio, manicured a prize-winning garden, and much more, thinking it was "our" home. Am I going to walk away with nothing? He even promised we would put my name on title several times, but did not get around to it (yeah right)

Much more to ask, but any help now would be so helpful!!

Although the home is not community property, you still do have some interest in it if community funds were used to pay the monthly mortgage payments.

Some of your community property issues may also stem from where the funds from the downpayment on the house came from. Did you friend contribute to that? She should probably see a lawyer soon, to clairify her rights (which could be substantial). If she can't afford a lawyer, the local bar association may be able to offer free or low-cost alternatives. In LA, the Bar association phone number is (213) 627-2727. The Family Law Information Center may also be more help (213) 974-5004. Good luck!
