Legal Question in Family Law in California
Husband left me (51) and college daughter (19). No notice. He took what he wanted, shipped some stuff loaded the rest into our car and moved to SC (from CA). I do not know what he took. I have a rare disease the affects thinking and memory, to name a few.I was in the process of applying for SSI, have no income. He left just days before our 29th anniversary. He wants to file for divorce online. I want a separation agreement in place now. I really need time before I agree to anything in a divorce because I have no idea, where or how I am going to live. He is self employed and a wizard at hiding money. We talk daily about a shared business that is ready to start making money and I keep it cordial because I am afraid of being cut off financially. I have no idea what my first step is and I have no money. Help.

Well, you might start with the Family Law Facilitator's Office at your county courthouse. They can answer questions and point you in the right direction. If you have lived in California for the last six months, you are eligible to file a dissolution in this state. You would file in the county where you have resided for the last three months. The Facilitator's Office might also have attorney referral lists and perhaps you can locate an attorney for a free initial consultation.
Keep in mind, if you try to represent yourself, you and you alone will be responsible for your court case. If you are not competent to do so, you really have no choice but to hire an attorney.
