Legal Question in Family Law in California
My husband and I are separately but haven't decided to file for divorce. What can I do to protect myself from his bad spending habits so I don't become responsible in the meantime for 1/2 of his future debts while we are separated?

If you are separated without any intention of resuming the marital relationship, you technically are no longer responsible. If you ever reconcile, however, you will be responsible for it all. Furthermore, most creditors will fight you on that if it is in their interests to do so. The only real way to cut off responsibility is to file for divorce and never get back together.
