Legal Question in Family Law in California

My husband signed a paper 14 years ago giving up his newborn for adoption. Now 14 years later, the mother of the child found him and said she changed her mind and kept the child. He never knew anything about it and she wants child support for the past 14 years. Can she do that? I was under the impression that she only had 2 years to notify him that she kept him and had the 2 years to file.

Thank you

The first thing that must be known is what document he signed relinquishing his parental rights. Second in California when one parent provides support for their child the other parent cannot be ordered to pay child support until a court order for child support is made. If mother has filed for child support the court can make an order for the payment starting at the time of the filing with the court. If public assistance was paid then the county can go back 3 years. He should not pay any support until he has consulted with an attorney.
