Legal Question in Family Law in California

Husband has been gone for 5 years

I had been married for a little over 1 year when my husband left me. He sent me a letter from jail. Presumably, he is out but it's going on 6 years now and I have not heard from him. And his mother will not give me any information.(She did not want us married anyways and tried to break it up) I am a Christian lady, single mother and would prefer not to get a divorce, but I am not sure what I should do.

The legal advice is that you should get a divorce so that you are no longer connected to this person and he cannot incur liabilities for which you may be responsible. Beyond that, it is a personal question should be discussed with your minister. If you don't want to dissolve the marriage, you can get a legal separtion which can protect you legally. If you don't know where he is at you can serve him by publication, that will not prevent you from obtaining a dissolution or legal separation. Good Luck, Pat McCrary
