Legal Question in Family Law in California
International child support
About two years ago, I found out that I had a 6 year old son. When I was in the military and stationed in Japan, I dated a woman that ended up saying she was pregnant with my child. When asked to do a DNA test, she refused, so the military dropped the issue.
Two years ago she came back to the U.S., to San Diego County and sued for child support. I really didn't know what to do, and all the legal advice that was given to me at the court house pretty much told me I was screwed, and had to pay what I was told to pay. A DNA test was performed and I was shown to be the biological father. I have no problems accepting my responsibilities, but in paying what I have been for almost two years, I can barely afford to live in my apartment and eat. I am wondering, with her being in Japan, and me being in California, was there special circumstances that I wasn't told about in paying child support? Do I have any kind of recourse that I can take in possibly lowering my payments or something? I don't have access to my son, I don't see him. I don't have the money to fly to Japan or to fly him to the U.S. Is there anyone that can possibly help me on this issue? I would be greatful.
