Legal Question in Family Law in California

I currently have a judgment of legal separation obtained in Los Angeles County 7 months ago. I want to file a new petition to change the "status" only --so I can get a judgment of "dissolution of marriage." All the other issues were taken care of in the judgment of legal separation. Once I file the petition do I have to wait 6 more months or will the judgment of dissolution of marriage be effective as soon as the judge signs the judgment of dissolution of marriage

The dissolution of marriage will be effective as soon as the judge signs the judgment. However, if the judge follows the law as I understand it, he or she will not be able to sign the judgment until six months after filing the petition for dissolution.
