Legal Question in Family Law in California

Kidnapped Puppy

My boyfirend gave me a puppy for my birthday, a few months later we broke up. We were sharing custody of the dog, He had him during the week and I had him on the weekends. Now my ex-boyfriend has the dog and is refusing to let me have him at all. The dog is licenced under my nname and I have payed all the vet. bills. How can I get my dog back?

Re: Kidnapped Puppy

Pets are regarded as chattel or tangible personal property. Therefore, you will have to treat the dog as if it were an appliance. Thus, the best way for you to go is Small Claims Court. I hope you get your doggy back or can come to an agreement with your ex. You might want to consider getting yourself another dog to avoid the litigation.

Happy holidays,

Martin
