lawyer bribbery? withdrawing

Is it legal for my att. to request 1,500.00 from me one week before the end of the case (divorce) then state that if I don't pay him I must sign an release of Att. papers? My account was paid in full the request was made (he Said) because he thought it would go to trail.

He is required to complete the case for the amount stated in your fee agreement. sign nothing to release him. He will need court permission to get out of the case and he will not get it one week before trial.
