Do I Need A Lawyer?!? DCFS

My brother physically abused my 4 year old neice and now he is in jail. The child's mother died shortly after her death. I am trying to adopt my neice but DCFS is pushing for my brother's girlfriends mother to adopt my neice. They are saying that since my brother has children with his girlfriend, her mother is somewhat connected to my niece. I need to appear in court soon to plead my side, should I get a lawyer?
