do i need a lawyer if the divorce does not include children, property, or assets?

Probably not. Get a copy of "How to Do Your Own Divorce in California" from Nolo Press. If you can follow the process outlined in that book, you're all set. If you run into trouble, your local Family Court will have a self-help desk or Family Law Facilitator office. Ask them for help. If you're still stuck after that, THEN you need a lawyer.
