Legal Custody - Liability

Does legal custody include shared liability of the child? Example: Both parents have joint legal custody but only one parent has physical custody. The child is in a car accident and is being sued - are both parents legally liable for the damage/lawsuit?

I am not aware of any case or statute that applies to this situation. However, the child should have been covered by insurance. The insurance company should defend your son. The other issue is who is the registered owner of the car he was driving. Which parent signed the DMV form required for him to get his driver's license. All of these factors would come into play in answering the question.
