Legal Question in Family Law in California

Legal issues on running away from home

I'm seventeen and my birthday is April 21st. I am thinking about leaving my home (where I live with my mother, step-father, and brother) and living with my friend's family when I turn eighteen. I'm still going to be going to highschool for another two months. Legally, can my mother force me to come home because I'm still going to school? Do I have a right to live with whoever I want upon turning eighteen?

Re: Legal issues on running away from home

You can move out without parental permission once you are 18, regardless of being in school. (Prior to that date, becoming an "emancipated minor" -- obtained through a court procedure -- would be required, absent another agreement.)

Remember too, that your parents' obligations to you (for example, providing health insurance) also will end when you leave home.

Best of luck to you.
