Legal seperation is best suited for individuals who for religious reasons can not divorce technically. It is suited for parties who want all of the financial seperation of a divorce but want to remain married. All of the same requirements of a divorce would need to be done except for the actual severing of the marital status.

For self represented individuals you can consult with the family law facilitator self help center at your local court house.

As always please consult a local attorney prior to taking legal action. Good luck. Also please check out my Santa Clara County Family Lawyer blog.

There may also be tax consequences, or inheritance issues, for example.
