Does a legal seperation or divorce free the parties from each others future debts or any lawsuits that should arise against the other party in the future?

Yes. Legal Separation (done through court, not just informally) is exactly the same as a divorce only you're not free to remarry. Same rules, same court orders, same waiting period, same everything except at the end you're not divorced. Unless you're facing a church/religion problem, or you need to stay on your spouse's health insurance, there's no real advantage to being legally separated as opposed to divorce.
