Legal Question in Family Law in California
How Do I Legally Change Minors Last Name?
I have sole custody of my 10 year old son. I recently got married and my son has requested to have his last name changed. He has never seen his father nor is his fathers name on his birth certificate. My husband and I have put off adoption only because it is so expensive. Will it be a problem to have his name changed to my married name taking all these factors into consideration?

You can change his name without taking any legal action. Inform the school that his name is changed to "the new name". California allows such a name change, unless it us done for a fraudulent purpose.
Adoption should be relative inexpensive. Contact the local department of social services regarding an application for a step-parent adoption. If the local family court has a family law clinic, make an appointment for advice regarding a step-parent adoption procedure.
