Legal Question in Family Law in California

Legally changing last name without getting married

My parents weren't married, I was given my mother's last name. I would like to drop my mother's name and take my father's last name.

I know it would mean changing my DL, SS card, etc, but where would I start legally? Is there a process established to do this? What is involved? Thank you
