Legal Question in Family Law in California
Lesbian Break Up
I met my girlfriend in NC 4 yrs ago. She persuaded me to move with her to California. I had to sell all of my furniture and belongings. Got to California and her father bought a house for us. Everytime we have an argument she tells me I have to move out and find my own place. She tries to throw me out over every little argument. I have lived in that house for over a year, have been paying rent and bills. Do I not have any rights at all?

Re: Lesbian Break Up
The answer to your question depends on whether you are breaking up for good now, or whether you intend to stay in this relationship. If the former, you could try suing for the value of what you gave up to move in with her. If the latter, you might want to register with the state as domestic partners which might (or might not) provide you with added protection. See http://www.nclrights.org/publications/ab25.htm Any lawsuit would be based on an implied contract to share expenses and contribute to the household. You should see a family law attorney experienced in domestic partnerships. One problem I foresee is that you are in Orange County, you might encounter prejudice from some judges there. You might also want to check out a domestic violence counselor, say in Long Beach or West Hollywood, as repeatedly threatening to throw you out is emotional abuse.
