Legal Question in Family Law in California

I live in Calif. am legally separated and have 1 child with my ex. I want to move to a different state to be closer to my family and my job has agreed to transfer. Can I move with the child, if I've notified my ex of my intentions? Would it be better to file before or after I've moved? What state should / can I file in Calif. or Washington state?

You must file before you move if you have an existing custody and support order, which if you are actually legally separated you must have. I should note, however, that an actual true legal separation is a rare thing. So if you do not have a court ordered judgment of legal separation with provisions for custody and support you should re-post your question with the exact details of the actual official legal status of your marriage and your child custody arrangments.
