Legal Question in Family Law in California
I live in santa clara county Ca. Im going through family court for a custody battle. My question is, is it appropriate to be sent outside the court room by the judge to address paternity papers? I didnt have a lawyer I was pro per and the other party did. Judge asked the attorney and I to step outside the court room into the hallway to address paternity papers. Once resolved we were to come back inside. Does this seem right? Or should it have been addressed on record? Any thing would help thanks

Without more details its difficult to give a complete answer. If the issue of paternity was properly before the court, then it is sensible for the parties to address that issue and the related pleadings by reviewing the paternity papers. If the paternity matter was not formally before the court, the court still can ask the parties to meet and confer about the paternity issue in an effort to streamline and move your case along. If you are asking to parent this child(ren) then formally establishing that you are the biological father protects you and your legal relationship to the child(ren)
It is entirely common for the court to direct people in family court to go outside and confer about issues to try to work it out and then come back to report a settlement or tell the court that the court will have to decide disputed issues.
