Legal Question in Family Law in California
We have been living together for 22 years. Do we qualify as domestic partners under California Family Code section 297? Also, briefly, what are benefits of registering as domestic partners if we don't want to marry? Thank You

We have moved our office to Elmira NY. If you are in the area please stop by. We are just off of the NYS Thruway, exit 56 east bound. You can also visit us on the web at http://www.abc27talkback.com Elmira NY attorneys
How long you have been together is irrelevant. You must either be same sex partners, OR one of you be qualified for old age Social Security payments (whether you are collecting them or not) and both at least age 62. There are other requirements as well, such as not married to anyone else, etc. As for benefits, now that same sex couples can marry, the only benefit is if you are over 62 years old and for tax, social security, Medicare, estate planning, or other similar reasons it would be disadvantaged to be married.
